Not Knowing: The Practice of Possibility, a teisho by Sensei KōDō Efird. Presented to Morning Star Zendo on May 31, 2021. There’s so much that can’t be known by thinking, mysteries that can’t be grasped intellectually. We need the flexibility to both know and not know. The talk focuses on three koans that span four centuries. The poet Rilke writes, “If you understand too much, Eternity passes you by.” Can we release our grip on certitude, open to possibility?
